On this special edition, we were honoured to have Carolyn Steel, architect and writer of the famous book Hungry City with us on an exploration of the history of food in Amsterdam. Even though temperatures were low – it was in fact the coldest 24th of March ever recorded – spirits were high and about 25 enthusiastic people were brave enough to face the arctic adventure!

Starting on Nieuwmarkt, exploring how cities were shaped by geography and discussing the importance of the Weighing House for a city’s control of the food system, we made our way around the old city centre following the traces of the trade in beer, grain, fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. After an hour’s walk, we took refuge at Cafe De Brakke Grond on Nes to further discuss the relationship between food and cities over a hot cup of tea. The group had the opportunity to ask questions to Anke and Carolyn and we had an interesting discussion about how industrialization and the disappearance of food from the heart of the city, led to squeamishness about what parts of an animal we do and do not eat. After this really nice and interesting afternoon we took the bike to the Food Film Festival where we were awaited with spicy soup on their bustling Food Market.

Het programma:

1)    Hoe te beginnen? Wat voor plek om te tuinieren heb je en wat kun je daar mee? Ook verkennen we de mogelijkheden van de locatie, maken een schetsontwerp en bekijken hoe we gebruik kunnen maken van restmaterialen voor de aanleg van de tuin.

2)    Zaaien en planten. We leren over zaden, (voor)zaaien en planten. We kijken naar het gebruik van een zaaischema en het maken van gunstige combinaties van planten. We gaan voorzaaien en zaailingen opkweken.

3)    Het aanleggen van de tuin. Een praktijkles (op zondag). Met behulp van restmaterialen leggen we gezamenlijk een tuin aan op bij de Noorderparkkamer en gaan zaaien en planten.

4)    Onderhoud. Hoe hou je je tuin gezond? We kijken naar eenvoudige manieren om je tuin gezond te houden en om te gaan met ziekten en plagen.

5)    Oogsten en koken. Een praktijkles (op zondag). Hoe maak je van je oogst  eenvoudige en lekkere gerechten? We bereiden met elkaar een smakelijk gerecht om te presenteren aan de bezoekers van de Noorderparkkamer op zondagmiddag en delen ook het eindresultaat van de workshops!

Elke workshop duurt 1 ½ uur en bestaat uit een combinatie van theorie en praktijk.

Carolyn Steels book Hungry City is a must read for anyone who wants to understand how food shaped our urban environments. Carolyn teaches to use food as a means to better understand how cities developed from the past till today’s urbanization. This is the reason why CITIES organizes the OLD AMSTERDAM FOOD TOUR, in which we explore the history of the city through the lens of food culture. For this special edition we start at 1 pm on Nieuwmarkt and end around 3 pm at Studio K. Tickets can be purchased through the Food Film Festival. Please bring your own bike, as part of the tour will be done by bike.

The project focuses on the development of innovative approaches to urban food/farming related issues. In particular, attention is paid to re-adaptation of the urban environment to grow food, new technology/methods for food transportation, new packaging technique

In the development of the project, we had no specific implementation problems. We did not secure political support. During the implementation, we did not face any regulatory barriers.From the economic point of view, the project is totally sustainable.
In particular, we benefit from private funds, such as personal finance.
