This event is the result of a six-month research project into the practice, prescription potential and future development of urban agriculture, with a focus on Amsterdam. The research has outlined the unexplored potential of urban farming as a tool for positive urban development. The exhibition brings together practical tools and initiatives that can help us to develop urban agriculture using existing city infrastructures, with the aim of supporting economic viability, social equity and better living environments in our cities. The exhibition is divdided in different parts.

CASE STUDIES RESEARCH – RESULTS REPORTING
The exhibition showcases the results of a detailed investigation into urban agriculture in Amsterdam, focusing on 20 innovative projects. The investigation’s outputs, available as reports and videos, outline project practice, aims, opportunities and challenges, along with suggestions for future action. A big size map of the city of Amsterdam locates the project analyzed and a system of icons defines typologies, actors and position on the food system.

URBAN TYPOLOGIES AND FOOD PRODUCTION
Research about Amsterdam’s site specific urban design and city farming potential, with a practical focus on what grows where, and which plants and foodstuffs are best adapted to which type of urban environment?

URBAN FARMING: HOW TO GET STARTED
Research about procedures, local policies and opportunities for engagement in urban farming practice in Amsterdam: if I want to start an urban agriculture project, what am I allowed to do, and in which places, spaces or buildings? Who can help me in my neighbourhood?

AMSTERDAM’s LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM
Analysis of a local food system and its potential for Amsterdam’s food future, focusing on the contribution and benefits of urban farming projects.

Video on the possibilities of sustainable local food transportation and consumption, supported by Rabobank. CITIES’ Amsterdam team cycled around the city to collect, prepare and cook local food for exhibition guests.

AMSTERDAM’s URBAN AGRICULTURE CYCLE ROUTE
We present the first urban agriculture cycle route, in collaboration with Nai (Dutch Architecture Institute) and ARCAM (Amsterdam Architecture Center), downloadable as an Urban Augmented Reality (UAR) application.

SHIPWRECK
In collaboration with Urbaniahoeve, an open air laboratory demonstrating three different ways in which urban agriculture can help to clean up polluted soil.

Farming the City exhibition and FarmingtheCity.net are demonstrating that we can make better use of existing city assets such as our urban infrastructure, our green spaces and our neglected and underused buildings and places to help support ourselves by growing food. It also shows that we can use new food growing, sourcing, packaging and distribution technologies, both high and low tech, to make the city more edible, greener, healthier, wealthier and happier.
